Layton Primary School is an Apple Distinguished School in Blackpool. They worked alongside JTRS to deliver a 1:1 iPad Programme for pupils and teachers, which has supported some amazing impacts on learning.

Committed to raising standards of academic achievement by creating a technology-rich learning environment, supported by a deep understanding of the learning process; Layton Primary School worked closely in partnership with JTRS to introduce an iPad 1:1 programme. Over the last 5 years, Layton Primary has provided iPads on a 1:1 basis to pupils across Key Stage 2 and every teacher is now equipped with an iPad Pro, Smart Keyboard, and Apple Pencil.
Situated on the eastern edge of Blackpool, Layton is a 3 form entry Primary School with 600 pupils that sits within the highest band of deprivation in England.
High achievement and high ambition are non-negotiable for Layton and through a culture underpinned by an ongoing mission to understand the learning process, Layton takes all the steps necessary to ensure their pupils succeed.
HeadTeacher, Jonathan Clucas, set out with a clear vision for how an iPad 1:1 programme would enhance learning and create a positive impact for pupils and teachers. Everyone at Layton Primary school is empowered to be a leader in learning. Their vision is to ‘Grow great minds together’ and to create the best conditions, curriculum and environment for maximum learning. iPad was chosen as the ideal tool to enable pupils and teachers to achieve this vision by promoting independence, increased opportunities for choice, curiosity, creativity, collaboration and a life-long passion for understanding and continuous learning.
Professional development is another key aspect of Layton’s successes. Teachers are encouraged and empowered to take ownership of their own professional development and are also supported by programmes such as Apple Teacher and Apple Professional Learning, provided by certified Apple Education Trainers from JTRS. Layton Primary School currently has 55 certified Apple Teachers and have received over 40 hours of Apple Professional Learning in the last 12 months.

SUSTAINABILITY WITH SUBSCRIPTION
In September 2017 Layton worked with JTRS to introduce a further 100+ iPads for pupils and iPad Pros, Smart Keyboards and Apple Pencils for teachers via the new BOS Subscription solution. BOS is a flexible and modular subscription solution that is underpinned by services. BOS ensures that an iPad 1:1 programme is sustainable for long-term impacts on learning. BOS has been created in partnership with our parent company, Econocom group, a major European digital services company,
Lisa Sheldon, School Business Manager, recognises that schools are facing real challenges presently in terms of finance and the uncertainty of future budgets. BOS was chosen as the preferred solution for Layton because of its simplicity in terms of management and budget planning. The services included in the BOS subscription also ensure that children and teachers will always have access to the latest technologies and features, which provides complete peace of mind.

In 2011 Layton
With the support of their iPad 1:1 programme, Layton has made rapid improvement as a school in terms of Ofsted, progressing from Satisfactory to Outstanding across all areas in 5 years. The Ofsted report from their Outstanding Inspection in November 2011 makes specific reference to how the 'state-of-the-art' and 'wide-ranging' use of information and communication technology has a significant impact on pupils’ successful learning and enjoyment.
In October 2017 Layton Primary School were successful in being recognised as an Apple Distinguished School. Apple Distinguished Schools are centres of leadership and educational excellence that demonstrate positive impact and the transformation of teaching and learning. As part of the process of becoming an Apple Distinguished School, Layton created an iBook which discusses their journey with iPad and documents their successes.

The use of information and communication technology (ICT) in school is innovative and far-reaching. Electronic tablets are used by staff and pupils in all aspects of learning, from collecting assessment information to discussing a pupil’s work in a lesson. They are also used to offer immediate feedback to pupils and for pupils to conduct their own research. The school’s use of ICT also adds a richness and fun to learning activities. For example, pupils in Year 1 were animated using their tablets to retell the story of ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ by Claire Freedman. The positive impact of ICT on the curriculum and on learning is immense and permeates through everything the school does.
The use of ICT makes an impressive contribution to teachers’ ability to respond to pupils’ learning needs and to give immediate feedback about their work. Electronic tablets are used to check pupils’ grasp of new knowledge. They are also used to share pupils’ work within the lesson and to enable immediate discussion and instant feedback as to strengths and where a piece of work could be improved. If a pupil is unsure about the meaning of a word or concept, the tablets are used adeptly to encourage pupils to seek the answer. For example, in an English lesson, some pupils were unsure of what continents were. The teacher asked them to quickly look it up. Instantly, pupils had a map indicating the continents of the world up on their screens. The teacher briefly checked understanding and resumed the main focus of the lesson.
